Dialogue Is Crucial in Resolving Sino-European Human Rights DifferencesDialogue is the only correct way in dealing with human rights differences between China and the European Union, said Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan. In his talks with Italian Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini March 28, Tang said that dialogue on human rights based on equality and mutual respect between China and Italy has yielded positive results since 1997. He hopes that Italy will continue to play an active role in this respect. Dini said the international community should recognize the progress China has made in human rights, adding that Italy will continue to advocate human rights dialogue with China. On the Taiwan issue, Tang said the elections in Taiwan were just a regional election in China, noting that whoever is in power can never alter the fact that Taiwan is part of Chinese territory. He highly praised Italy's adherence to the one China stance, and said he hopes that Italy will keep a vigilant eye against separatist activities that threaten to divide China. The Italian government will continue to observe the one China stance. Italy has no official relations with Taiwan and will not seek such relations, Dini stressed. The two foreign ministers also expressed satisfaction with the growth of Sino-Italian relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations three decades ago. Tang said the Chinese government places great importance on developing friendship and cooperation with Italy, and there exists enormous potential for economic and trade cooperation between China and Italy. He added the two countries also share identical or similar views on some major international issues. China is ready to work with Italy to further promote the stable development of bilateral relations. Dini told Tang that the Italian government is willing to maintain high-level contacts with China, and pursue cooperation in a number of areas, including promoting Italian businesses to take part in developing the central and western parts of China. He reiterated Italy's support for China's early accession into the World Trade Organization.
