Notice Urges Attention to Forest FiresThe State Administration of Forestry March 28 released a notice urging localities to act swiftly and take every possible measure to prevent forest fires that may occur during the upcoming Chinese holiday of Qingming, or tomb-sweeping day.Chinese people go outdoors and light fireworks and burn paper made to resemble money on this day as an offering to the dead on tomb-sweeping day, which falls on April 5. The notice asks local governments and forestry departments to make fire prevention their top priority and be on the alert with around-the-clock watchmen. It also asks forestry departments to strengthen their control over possible fire sources and ban them all in forest areas. On days when the weather poses high risk of fire, outdoor fires will be banned, the notice said. An official with the administration said that both north and south China are in a period of high-risk for forest fires. Statistics show that so far this year, the country has had 620 forest fires which killed 15 people and injured 14 others.
