China Will Honor its WTO Commitments: Trade Minister

As a responsible major country, China will stay faithful to its words and carry out its due obligations after entering the World Trade Organization (WTO), said Shi Guangsheng, China's foreign trade minister, at the China Development Forum.

Shi, who spoke at a session of the forum on China's WTO accession and opening policy, reassured foreign business leaders and representatives from international organizations that China will carry out its commitments on market opening, saying that it's pointless to doubt China's credibility.

Zhang Xiaoji, a researcher at the Development Research Center under China's State Council, said that joining the world trade regime may not necessarily mean big trouble for all state-owned enterprises (SOEs).

"A major part of China's commitments upon entering the WTO happens to be exactly what the SOEs have been asking from the government, and carrying out these promises will just suit their need for greater freedom of management," he said.
