Mobile Communication Giant Launches New Service

The China Mobile Communication Corporation (CMCC) will initiate a new service in six Chinese cities which will allow its mobile phone users to access information and services on the Internet, according to the Beijing Mobile Communication Company, a CMCC affiliate.

With the trial launching of the wireless application protocol (WAP) network in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen, the company's users whose mobile phones are compatible with digital services will be able to use the phones to surf the Internet, send and receive e-mail, and engage in e-commerce.

Beijing Mobile Communication will offer such services to its network users free of charge between now and the end of May, during which time the network will be operating on a trial basis, according to Zhao Jinxiang, vice president of the company.

Major mobile phone makers such as Motorola, Nokia, and Ericsson are already promoting their WAP mobile phones in these six cities.

Beijing Mobile Communication now has nearly 1.7 million users connected with its Global System for Mobiles (GSM) network.
