Seven Industries to be Developed in ChinaAn article, carried in the latest issue of Hong Kong's Economic Information and Agency, reveals that there are seven industries to be developed in China. The article says that the seven industries "are highly profitable"..The seven industries noted by the article respectively are: the newly rising oceanic industry, garbage disposal industry, leisure life industry, old people services industry, sports industry, agro- technology industry and auxiliary industry. The article reports that the proven offshore oil deposits of China currently reaches 1.7 billion tons, only less than 7 percent of the gross deposits of 25.5 billion tons. The sphere of prospecting and exploration on offshore petroleum will be extended from shallow sea to deep sea. Various types of holiday resorts have emerged in many coastal cities and islands, which attract more than 10 million overseas tourists every year. Since the beginning of the 1990s, income from tourism earned by coastal provinces and cities has witnessed an average annual growth of 30 percent. Coastal tourism industry has become the third biggest industry in the oceanic economy of China. Compared with oceanic chemical industry, different kinds of oceanic medicines and health-care foods have a much broader prospects for development. In addition, there are 300 water-short cities nationwide. Such being the case, the desalination and direct utilization of sea water have been listed as a new oceanic industry given priority development by the Chinese government. As regards the garbage disposal industry, it is estimated that the average annual household garbage per capita is about 4,450 km, i.e. each urban resident throws out 1.2 km of refuse every day. The current amount of urban household garbage disposed of has reached 100 million tons, which is growing at 8-10 percent annually. If related regulations and policies can be adopted and carried out smoothly, then, the industry of garbage disposal will possibly become a hot spot for investment in the 21st century. The article points out that as a sunrise industry, sports industry has become a worldwide large-scale industrial economy. The gross annual output value of the world's sports industry is about US$ 400 billion, and is growing at a 20 percent annual rate. The annual business volume of the football market alone has reached US$ 250 billion. The total business volume of the sports industry of the United States in 1997 exceeded US$ 100 billion, ranking 22nd of all industries of the country. The gross income of Japan's sports industry hits 4200 billion yen, placing sixth among the 10 pillar industries. In recent years, sports brokers have appeared in China. Taking advantages of their rich experiences and well-informed interpersonal relationships, they have brought about the flourishing of sports competitions. They have also played a decisive role in the management of the change of players' association membership. This year, China will enact the Law on Sports Brokers, to standardize their conduct, and gradually foster its own IMG companies, thus laying a legal foundation for expediting the process of sport industrialization. The article adds that "providing auxiliary parts for big companies" has actually become a fairly large industry in the world. However, it is regrettable that Chinese enterprises are not sensitive to the demand of transnational companies for supporting parts and have thus lost many opportunities. Some personages in the economic circle suggest that Chinese enterprises should be well informed, and that they should take the initiative to seek cooperation opportunities and improve the quality of auxiliary parts as quickly as possible. Compared with some overseas firms, relevant Chinese enterprises have the advantages of low production costs, if they can satisfy the demand of big companies for better products, they can undoubtedly become competitive new industries.
