China to Promote International Cooperation in Basic Research

China intends to more actively participate in major global and regional international basic research programs and projects, a senior official said on Monday.

Li Xueyong, vice minister of Science and Technology, said at a national conference on basic research which opened Monday, that major international programs include the human genome project, global weather research programs, and ocean drilling programs.

He said that in the next 10 years China's basic research will go with the international development trend and the country will enhance its international cooperation in related fields.

The vice minister said China will support major international research programs, and that China has special knowledge in certain fields initiated by Chinese scientists, such as the South China Sea monsoon research program and space weather monitoring systems for the eastern hemisphere.

He said China will create more favorable conditions for sending more scientists, especially young scientists, to take part in major international research programs and other important academic exchanges.

Li said China will open some of its basic research programs to outstanding foreign scientists.

China will also encourage holding international academic meetings in the country.

The official said that China welcomes the establishment of international research centers and will prepare to open China's research organs abroad when conditions are ripe.

The three-day national conference is jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and two other relevant departments.
