Qinghai to Auction Over 8 Million-mu of Wastelands

In order to attract capital, treat the fountainheads of the Yellow and Yangtze rivers and improve the ecological economy, the Party Committee and government of Qinghai Province have, in the process of expediting the large-scale development of the west, broken down the barrier of administrative division as they recently announced that the 8 million-plus mu (15 mu = one hectare) of wasteland suitable for forest and agriculture and lying in various parts of the province would be auctioned to the whole country.

Qinghai is a province with a large area, rich resources and a small population. Owing to the shortage of financial resources, the development of its unique and abundant resources has failed to produce benefits of scale, its 2 million-odd mu of deteriorated grasslands have not been effectively treated and its 8 million mu of wasteland mentioned above have not been tapped and utilized. In the upsurge of the massive development of China's west, Qinghai Province has decided to auction to the whole country the wasteland and barren hills which can be used to plant crops, trees and medicinal herbs on the principle of being beneficial to the country, collective and individual, thereby bringing fortune to the developers and development to itself.
