| Tuesday, March 28, 2000, updated at 16:25(GMT+8) Culture Qinghai to Build More Roads for Development of Special TourQinghai Province will develop special tour of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau as a major industry, according to the Communications Department of this province in northwest China. Therefore, the department will build five important, high-standard tour roads specially within the province. The planned five tour roads are: the 161-km-long Qinghai Lake-rim road, the 60-km-long road in the state-level Beishan Forest Park of Tu Autonomous County of Huzhu, the 33-km-long road from the famed Lijiaxia Hydropower Station area on the upper reaches of the Yellow River to the state-level Kanbur Forest Park, the 48-km-long road from Qingshui Township of Salar Autonomous County of Xunhua to the Tianchi Lake of Mengda, the 250-km-long road from Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Golog to the fountainhead of the Yellow River, which will be connected to the Qinghai-Tibet Road. Deputy director Zang Enmu of the Communications Department said that Qinghai will invest a total of 580 million yuan to build the five roads by the standard of the second- and the third-grade road. Qinghai, situated in the eastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau with an area of 0.72 million square km, has a vast land but a small population. The highland climate of coldness and less oxygen, landform of plateau as well as the weak economic foundation all have restricted its fast development of highways building. Qinghai, an important province of tourism resources, has the largest inland saltwater lake - Qinghai Lake, one of the six most famous Buddhist temple - Ta'er Monastery, the unique scene of snow plateau, multi-ethnic folklore and rich resources for highland exploration. In the past two years, with the quick development of special tour of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the lagging road building can't suit the fast growth of tourism industry. The five roads to be built will effectively improve the traffic conditions for Qinghai's tourist industry. Printer-friendly VersionBack to top |
