Putin's Victory Reflects Russian People's Aspiration and Expectation

The results of the Russian presidential elections reflect the aspiration and expectation of the Russian people, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi said in Beijing Monday.

He made the remarks in the wake of the Russian presidential elections Sunday, in which acting President Vladimir Putin won a victory.

"Chinese President Jiang Zemin has already sent a message of heartfelt congratulations to Putin on behalf of the Chinese government and people," Sun said.

"We sincerely hope that under the leadership of President Putin, Russia will see social stability, economic development and the Russian people will enjoy a comfortable life," the spokesman said.

He also expressed the belief that with the direct promotion of heads of state of both China and Russia and the concerted efforts made by both sides, Sino-Russian relations "will surely achieve steady growth in the new century," he said.
