Copyright Protection Goals Achieved

The National Copyright Administration recently issued yearly statistics on copyright protection which showed that anti-infringement measures have been successful.

The statistics indicate that eight provinces and municipalities, including Shanghai, Jiangsu, Chongqing, Sichuan, Guangdong, Guizhou, Anhui, and Jilin, have set up alliances to combat piracy. According to sources, China plans to set up a nationwide network against piracy in the near future.

Local copyright administrations dealt with 1,616 cases in 1999, 1,515 of which were completed, the statistics said.

Meanwhile, localities confiscated more than 20 million pirated publications in 1999, including 14 million books, 220,000 items of software, 4.5 million audio-visual and electronic products, and 1. 6 million other items.

Most of the pirated products were confiscated in Zhejiang, Hunan, Guangdong, Hubei, and Shanghai.

In copyright trading, nationwide publishing houses imported 6, 461 overseas copyrights, a record high, and exported 418 domestic copyrights to foreign counterparts.

In addition, 1,932 contracts on overseas audio-visual products were signed in the past year, according to the statistics.
