Chinese Steel Giant Resumes Full Production

The first iron-making system of Shanghai's Baoshan Steel Company, one of the country's leading steel complexes, has resumed normal production. The company suspended operation of the system because of a fire caused by wiring fault on February 28.

The first converter of the plant resumed operation on March 8, and the second, last Friday. Since only two of the three converters in a system are operated simultaneously, the resumption of the first and second converters means the system is again producing at full capacity.

The company has pledged that despite the suspension of operations, the interests of clients both at home and abroad will be guaranteed, all contracts will be carried out on time and goods will be delivered as scheduled.

Since the fire, Baoshan has upgraded its steel-making systems. A spokesman for the plant says profit for this year could be 15 percent more than last year's 1.5 billion yuan or 180 million U.S. dollars, despite the accident.
