China to Introduce More Natural Gas from its West to the East

China plans to introduce more natural gas from its western region to the eastern. Zeng Peiyan, Minister of the State Development Planning Commission, said at a conference on March 25 that the program is part of China's strategy to develop the vast western region. Planning and design of the program will be finished in a year.

Gas exploration companies should aim to discover 300 billion cubic meters of new natural gas reserves in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region by the end of this year, so as to realize the goal of bringing the region's total prospected gas reserves to one trillion cubic meters.

Work on the trunk gas pipeline will begin next year, and it should go into operation in 2003.
