China's Famous Tourist City Combats Urban Sewage

Guilin, a well-known tourist destination in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, has started construction of a pipeline facility that will stop the random discharge of sewage water into scenic lakes of the city. The facility is just one of the many projects designed by the city to treat urban sewage and to improve the quality of the water in the lakes of the city.

According to local environmental protection departments, there are 49 sewage discharge outlets around Ronghu, Shanhu and Guihu, three major lakes of the city, and residents living nearby discharge more than 20,000 tons of untreated sewage water into the lakes each day, causing a serious pollution in the water of the lakes.

The facility will require installation of pipelines with a total length of 2,400 meters and construction of two pumping stations. The sewage collected will be sent into the city's centralized drainage network via the two pumping stations. The entire project will cost 2.6 million yuan. It is scheduled to be completed on November 30, said local sources. Guilin, with a history of more than 2,000 years, is renowned for its green mountains, clear water and strangely-shaped stone formations.
