Beijing Popularizes New-Type Water Taps to Reduce Waste

The Chinese capital city Beijing declared on the eighth annual World Water Day today that it will gradually phase out old-type water taps in order to reduce the waste of water resources.

Several teams of volunteers were organized today to help popularize the use of a new-type water faucet in households as part of the activities held to mark World Water Day.

Instead of needing to be turned tightly, the new water-saving tap can be turned on and off easily and instantly.

A dripping water faucet can cause the waste of between one and six tons of water per month, according to the municipal office for water conservation.

Officials at the office said that about half of the households and institutions in Beijing are still using the old-type taps today, and these taps start dripping after being used for some time, causing a great waste of water every year.

Water shortage is a prominent problem in Beijing, and the per capita water resources here amount to only 300 cubic meters, only about one-eighth of the national average and one-thirtieth of the world average.
