China to Hold Environment-related Web Page Design Contest

The Chinese Internet content provider Sina and environmentalists announced here today a plan to hold a web page design contest online to improve the awareness of the general public of environmental protection.

The planned contest, the first of its kind in China to be launched on March 25 by the China Association of the Environmental Protection Industry in cooperation with several companies, will focus on designing web pages devoted to environmental protection, Wang Xinyan, spokesman for the organizing committee of the contest, said here today.

He said all the 10 million subscribers to Internet service providers in China and others who have access to the Internet are eligible to participate in the competition for the selection of the best 25 web pages.

"Anybody who wants to participate in this contest should go online first at the website of www.sina.com.cn to get to know the terms and requirements of the contest", he told reporters. The top 25 web pages will be selected by environmental protection experts.

Yu Yuefeng, president of the China Environment News, said the Internet is perhaps the best medium for spreading knowledge of environmental protection among the general public in China.

Meng Fanli, a spokesman for China's State Environmental Protection Administration, said today the administration is considering drawing people's attention to environmental protection through launching publicity campaigns on the Internet later this year or next year.
