Leaders of two non-Communist parties and the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce ( ACFIC) stressed here today their resolute support for the position of the Chinese government on the issue of Taiwan. Xu Jialu, chairman of the Central Committee of the China Association for the Promotion of Democracy (CAPD), said that peaceful negotiations are the best way to solve the Taiwan issue, but the prerequisite for a peaceful solution to the issue is the one China principle, as pointed out by President Jiang Zemin on Monday. During his meeting with visiting President Denis Sassau- nguesso of the Republic of the Congo on Monday, Jiang said dialogues and negotiations across the Taiwan Straits should have a basis, namely, the one China principle must first be recognized, and under this prerequisite, every thing can be discussed. Luo Haocai, chairman of Central Committee of the China Zhi Gong Party (Public Interest Party), said Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, and the "One China" principle must be upheld at all times and under any circumstances. Luo said the Chinese people, including the compatriots in Taiwan and overseas Chinese, will never allow the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the motherland to be damaged even by a tiny bit. The China Zhi Gong Party unswervingly supports all the measures taken by the Chinese Government to solve the Taiwan issue and promote the reunification of the motherland, he said. Jing Shuping, chairman of the ACFIC, said the change of leadership in the Taiwan region cannot change the fact that Taiwan is part of Chinese territory. With regard to the new leader of the Taiwan region, "we should listen to his words and watch his actions," Jing said. He warned that those who are bent on seeking "Taiwan independence" will get nowhere. "Those who play with fire will get burnt," he said |
