Clinton Urges India, Pak to Resume Talks on Kashmir

Visiting U.S. President Bill Clinton said here on Tuesday that he hopes India and Pakistan could resume dialogue on the issue of Kashmir on the basis of restraint, non-violence and respect of the Line of Control (LoC).

"You cannot expect a dialogue to go on unless there is absence of violence and there is respect for Line of Control," Clinton told Indian and foreign reporters after two hours of talks with Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Tuesday morning.

The United States wants India and Pakistan to show restraint, respect the LoC, stand against violence and restore dialogue so as to resolve the tension between the two countries, said Clinton.

The U.S. President added that he would convey the same message to the Pakistani leadership during his brief stopover in Islamabad on his way home on Friday.
