China is to put 600 million yuan, or 72 million US dollars, into improving facilities in some scenic spots in poor western regions. The move aims to turn natural advantages to economic benefits for the local people.
The 600 million yuan is being allocated from the 50 billion yuan in state bonds issued this year. Its aim is to help poor counties rich in tourist attractions in western regions to improve their facilities. The funds will cover road building, waste disposal, water supply and ecological protection.
Yang Weiqing, from the State Development Planning Commission, said the priority in developing these tourist attractions is to prevent damage to the natural environment in the areas.
It's estimated that people from 120 poor counties in the western regions will benefit from this project.
