Tuesday, March 21, 2000, updated at 09:12(GMT+8) Business Coca-Cola Makes New Investment in Western ChinaA new plant with financing from the Coca-Cola Corporation, one of the world's top 500 business giants, started production today in this capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province. According to the company,the Coca-Cola Kunming New Plant, with 300 employees and involving an investment of 22 million US dollars, mainly produces soft drinks, which will be sold throughout Yunnan via nine marketing outlets. The executive of the company said that the Kunming plant is the fifth Coca-Cola bottling plant set up in western China following those in Xi'an, Chengdu, Nanning and Taiyuan. Coca-Cola has invested 1.1 billion US dollars in China since 1979, just after China had launched its reform and opening-up drive nationwide, and has set up a total of 24 bottling factories in the country. "Our businesses in China have harvested good economic returns," according to the executive, citing the example of the Coca-Cola plant in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province. The Wuhan plant, which was founded in 1995, has been producing profits since 1998. The executive vowed that the company would make more investments in other areas of western China as preferential policies and low-cost labor are available there.
