Nuclear Power Firms Ready

Foreign and domestic firms are eager to get involved in the nuclear power business in China and the Sixth China International Nuclear Industry Exhibition was a reflection of that.

"The nuclear power industry in China is very promising," said Li Dingfan, general manager of China National Nuclear Corp, at the opening ceremony yesterday at the National Agricultural Exhibition Hall.

The prospect has already motivated an increasing number of international business giants to come to China, intending to compete for a bigger piece of the cake. The companies now include Framatome, Cogema, ABB, Westinghouse and Mitsubishi.

"These companies have brought their nuclear technologies involving generators, fuel production and waste treatment to the show," the official said.

"We always want to do more in China (in the nuclear power industry) and wish to have a closer and closer relationship with the Chinese Government in the field," said Michel Pelloie, thcyete international operations manager for Framatome, the first foreign firm to enter China's nuclear power business as early as 1984 to construct the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant.

The idea appeals to domestic firms and institutions too, who are striving to turn out more advanced and up-to-date designs and equipment for the Chinese nuclear industry.

"We should upgrade our technological level as soon as possible. Now we are using more and more Chinese-made equipment in the nuclear power plant," said Hu Minggang, a senior engineer with the China Nuclear Power Institute.

Presently, some of the core technologies and equipment are still imported to meet the demand, he added.

The exhibition will run until Friday. More than 130 companies and institutions from 15 countries have participated, including France, Russia, the United States, Canada, Japan and Germany.
