Premier Zhu Rongji said on March 20 that China attaches importance to its relations with Lithuania and hopes that such constructive relationship can be developed steadily in the future. Zhu made the remarks during his meeting with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Algirdas Saudargas here this morning. After expressing his welcome to Saudargas, the first Lithuanian foreign minister to visit China since the two countries forged diplomatic ties nine years ago, Zhu pointed out that bilateral relations have witnessed rapid growth thanks to the concerted efforts of both sides. The Chinese premier reiterated that his government will continue to support Lithuania's efforts to safeguard national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also extended gratitude to Lithuania's support to China on Taiwan issue. Saudargas said the ties between Lithuania and China are extremely important, and that Lithuania expressed his admiration for China's successful economic reform and achievements the country has made in this regard, adding that Lithuania is ready to learn from China's valuable experience. Noting that the Lithuanian-Chinese relations are progressing smoothly, he said Lithuania will continue to implement "One China" policy and will work to lift bilateral ties up to a new height. Saudargas, who arrived here on Sunday as guest of his Chinese counterpart Tang Jiaxuan. Besides Beijing, Saudargas and his party are also expected to travel to Shanghai and Shenzhen in southern China. |
