Poll Shows Chinese Mainlanders Oppose Taiwan Independence

About 95 per cent of the people in the Chinese mainland say they are firmly on the side of the central government to open fire with Taiwan, if the latter dares to declare independence from the motherland.

A recent poll among residents above the age of 18, done by the China Society Survey & Investigation Centre in China's seven main cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Wuhai, Changsha, Chongqing and Harbin, indicates that they are willing to shed their blood for their country if the leader of Taiwan wants to secede Taiwan from China.

And, more than 90 per cent of the surveyed think that Taiwan issue will surely become more complicated, if it was not settled at the current stage, according to Hong Kong's Wen Hui Po on Saturday.

All the interviewed people, done by a telephone investigation aided by computers, said Taiwan election belongs to a local provincial-level vote, and the affairs of local Taiwan people, and their mainland compatriots will not interfere in the election. However, no matter who wins the election, he must not pursue Taiwan independence under whatever forms, the surveyed people said.

And, all the interviewed said Chinese people are not afraid of threat from foreign countries at all, and they will stand up and are ready to shed their blood for China's territorial unity and national integrity.

The surveyed said they hope the new leader of Taiwan keep a clear head of the current situation across the Taiwan Straits, and sit down with the mainland embarking on earnest negotiations in order to achieve unification and revival of the Chinese nation.
