Lawmakers Contribute 41 Changes to Gov't Work Report

Chinese legislators have helped make 41 changes in the Government Work Report delivered by Premier Zhu Rongji on March 5 at the opening meeting of the Third Session of the Ninth National People's Congress (NPC).

The report was passed at the NPC session's closing meeting March 15.

During the past two weeks, the NPC deputies discussed the premier's report with great earnestness and proposed revisions, focusing on reforming the existing education and schooling systems and calling for greater efforts to improve the overall quality of schoolchildren and relieve them of excessive homework.

Other major revisions include a pledge to study and promote the country's fledgling e-commerce; the inclusion of "water conservancy, transport and telecommunications" among fields that will be financed with proceeds from the issuance of treasury bonds; an addition of "to actively promote the popularization and utilization of farm-related technological achievements".

The deputies also helped revise some paragraphs concerning ongoing state enterprise reform and foreign trade.
