China is launching a "Green Light Program" nationwide to implement an energy-saving policy. The program confirms to a shift in energy production from extensive to intensive, said an official with the China State Power Corporation. The program will help China reduce electricity use by 20 percent annually starting this year, or 30 billion kWh equivalent to 15 million tons of raw coal. It will also reduce dust and ash emissions by 20 million tons. According to the official, the government believes the program will be a major energy-saving project and is planning to manufacture more efficient lighting fixtures and develop a lighting industry that improves lighting quality and promotes energy-conservation and environmental protection. To reach its goal of saving 30 billion kWh of electricity annually beginning this year, China plans to use 300 million compact fluorescent lamps and thin fluorescent lamps, and other more energy-efficient appliances in both residential and office buildings. |
