China Tuesday demanded that the U.S. Senate honor the United States' commitment on Tibet and immediately stop all acts that interfere in China's internal affairs by taking advantage of the Tibet issue. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi made the remarks in response to a question on the U.S. Senate's March 9 resolution designating March 10, 2000 as National Day of Tibet. Sun said the document "wantonly distorted the historical facts on the peaceful liberation of Tibet and randomly attacked and humiliated China." "The Chinese government and people express their strong resentment and firm opposition against such a resolution," Sun said, as in adopting the resolution the U.S. Senate "disregards the facts and basic norms of international relations and grossly interferes in China's internal affairs." The spokesman urged the United States to stop using human rights to interfere in China's internal affairs. When asked about China's response to reports that the U.S. would table a resolution on China's human rights at the coming Human Rights Commission session in Geneva, the spokesman said the U.S. should immediately stop its erroneous decision to advance such an anti-China move. The spokesman also noted at the conference that China welcomes the progress made in negotiations between the Red Cross societies of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Japan. Officials of the Red Cross societies of DPRK and Japan concluded their one-day meeting in Beijing Monday night and issued a joint statement, which says that the two sides reached agreements on and discussed details of such previously-covered issues as the home-visit of Japanese spouses living in DPRK, the investigations into the whereabouts of missing Japanese, and Koreans missing before the year 1945. Sun also announced at the press conference that Vice President of the Republic of the Philippines Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will visit China from March 22 to 27, and a delegation of the State Great Hural of Mongolia led by its Chairman Radnaasumberel Gonchigdorj will pay an official goodwill visit to China from March 20 to 26. |
