Saturday, March 11, 2000, updated at 10:50(GMT+8) China U.S. Fomented Separatist Forces in Taiwan: TangWhat the United States has done toward Taiwan has fomented separatist forces in Taiwan and the United States has unshirkable responsibilities for this, said Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan Friday afternoon. Tang made the remarks at a press conference sponsored by the 3 rd Session of the 9th National People's Congress (NPC). On the question of U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, Tang said that the quantity and quality of the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan have gone up. The United States is also preparing to provide a Theater Missile Defense (TMD) System to Taiwan and it is to pass a Taiwan Security Enhancement Act. Tang said that all these are against the three Sino-U.S. Joint Communiques and have broken its commitment to "Three-Nos." He said that at present Sino-U.S. relations and cross-Strait relations are at an important and crucial stage. The United States should understand that what it is doing and saying on the Taiwan issue directly concerns the development of Sino-U.S. relations, peace and stability in Taiwan and the Asia-Pacific Region. Tang said China strongly demands that U.S. implement the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques and the "Three-Nos" and not to provide any TMD system or related technology and equipment to Taiwan. "The U.S. should stop the adoption of the Taiwan Security Enhancement Act by its Congress and stop interfering in China's internal affairs," he said.
