Ecological Shelter Construction Intensified in Beijing

Beijing has made the pledge to build a 100 sq.km large protective ecological shelter outside the city in the coming three years.

The pledge has greatly pushed forward the city's ecological shelter construction ahead of time originally set for ten years. Liu Qi, mayor of Beijing said at the municipal mobilization meeting March 8: "Without a superior ecological and orderly social environment, Beijing will pose no attraction to people, new technology and capital and all will be empty words when talking about economic development of the capital". Environment construction will decide Beijing's deal to bid for the 2008 Olympic Games, he said.

According to a comprehensive plan for city construction mapped as early back as in 1993, there should be 1,040 sq.km of urban districts to be developed along with 240 sq.km of a large ecological protective shelter to be built around the city. But, to this day, there is merely a 40 sq.km shelter that has been completed.

According to plan, there will be brought into existence of a tremendous green industry after completion of the ecological protective shelter in Beijing. Exclusive to this industry will be a wide variety of trees, herb and plant species including those fast growing, economic forests, flowers, botanical garden and others. Various types of commercial green undertakings as tourism centers, green valleys and oxygen bar along with golf courses, grass sports events, green parks, small pastures, man-made lakes out of lowlands will be launched to add beauty to Beijing.
