Chinese Judges to Change Military-style Uniforms

Chinese judges will take off their military-style uniforms characterized with epaulets and caps, and wear judicial robes or western suits with badges, said an official with the Supreme People's Court yesterday.

Xiao Yang, president of the Supreme People's Court, is scheduled to make a work report in the new judicial robes at the National People's Congress session on March 10.

The change in judge uniforms will begin on a trial basis this year at the Supreme People's Court in Beijing, Shanghai, south China's Hainan Province as well as in Shenzhen, Dalian and Qingdao.

Judges at the Intermediate People's Court or above will try out the new uniforms this year, while other Chinese judges are expected to try out their new uniforms next year.

The Supreme People's Court and the Ministry of Finance issued a circular on changing the uniforms of judges in China.

These new uniforms were chosen by the Supreme People's Court after soliciting opinions from NPC deputies, members of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), as well as suggestions from the public.
