Some members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) have urged the media to play a bigger supervisory role and said relevant laws and regulations should be formulated to protect the legal rights and interests of journalists.

They made the call at the ongoing annual session of the CPPCC National Committee, pointing out that media's supervision is an important part of socialist democracy and the rule of law. Chinese reporters have often faced difficulties, obstructions and threats from institutions and individuals when they try to interview related people and do investigative reporting, they noted.

Nobody should have the right to refuse media access to sources of information if reporters act legally, and in the meanwhile, media people should also improve their own quality, they said.
