Parliament Announces Legislative Plan for 2000

China's top legislator said that the Standing Committee of the Ninth National People's Congress ( NPC), the country's legislature, will draft and revise a series of laws this year.

Li Peng, NPC Standing Committee chairman, announced a legislation package in his report on the work of the NPC Standing Committee delivered in Beijing today at the ongoing 3rd Session of the Ninth NPC.

The Standing Committee will draft laws on anti-monopoly, anti- dumping, supervision, social security, proprietorship, and state assets, Li said, adding that legislation will be speeded up on science and technology, and laws concerning banking services and international trade will be enacted or amended.

Those to be amended include laws on trade marks, patents, regional autonomy and marriage.

"We should further link legislative work to major state policies relating to reform, development and stability. Therefore, we will do further studies on, and amend, the Corporate Law to meet the needs of state enterprise reform and development," Li said.

The proposed amendment to Law on Regional Autonomy aims to promote economic and social development, strengthen national unity, maintain the unification of the country, and fight separatism, Li said.

The legislator also promised to have a relatively complete civil code within the five-year term of the Ninth NPC which expires in 2003.
