China to Set up Medical Insurance System in 2000

China is expected to implement the medical insurance schemes in 70 percent of its cities this year and basically set up a medical insurance system for urban residents by the end of this year.

Zhang Zuoyi, minister of labor and social security, said at a press conference at the on-going Third Session of the Ninth National People's Congress that the medical insurance network will initially cover about 50 million urban residents.
