Tuesday, March 07, 2000, updated at 09:15(GMT+8) Business West China High-tech Belt Reaps 30 Billion Yuan in 1999The Guanzhong high-tech industrial belt in Shaanxi Province in west China reported a total earning of 30 billion yuan (about 3.6 billion U.S. dollars) in 1999, up 20 percent from the previous year. Shaanxi, a land-locked province and one of China's leading regions in the science and technology and education, built up the Guanzhong high-tech belt last year, which consists of Xi'an and Baoji industrial development zones and the Yangling agricultural high-tech experimental zone. The Xi'an high-tech industrial development zone alone earned 20 billion yuan (about 2.4 billion U.S. dollars) last year, up 40 percent than 1998. Now it has become the most prosperous high-tech zone in west China. Over 100 industrialized high-tech projects were also put into operation during the period, statistics show. Stepping up the high-tech sector growth has been a primary task of the local government in recent years. This year, the high-tech industry is expected to make greater achievement in the wake of west development, China's ambitious strategy to stimulate the local economy.
