Tuesday, March 07, 2000, updated at 10:35(GMT+8) Culture Ruin of Eastern Gate of Ancient Yangzhou City DiscoveredThe eastern gate of the ancient Yangzhou City in Jiangsu Province, the key cultural protection unit at national level, was brought to light on March 3 after being buried underneath for nearly 1,000 years. The ruin was discovered by Yangzhou archaeological team in an exploration for transforming the old city of Yangzhou. The initial excavation has uncovered the main walls of the eastern city gate of Yangzhou in the Song Dynasty, and the brick-paved roads, part of the jarred city and brick-paved paths within it were also found. The gate extends 12.3 meters in width with the inside and outside of the wall applied with bricks and the ruin was all well preserved. Archaeological study shows that the western gate of the Yangzhou city was found built in the same place after the Tang Dynasty while the eastern gate was gradually moved toward the east by the same axis. The discovery of the ruined eastern gate has provided us with an important and substantial value for revealing the different features of the Yangzhou City in various dynasties.
