Trade Unions Asked to Play Still Bigger Role in Reforms

Trade Unions should work harder still to press ahead with the whole-hearted implementation of the Communist Party of China (CPC)'s guiding principle of relying on the working class and carry out their functions of safeguarding the rights and interests of enterprise employees.

Wei Jianxing, president of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, made the remarks in Beijing during his visit to members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) from the sector of trade unions who are attending the current annual session of the CPPCC National Committee.

Taking Deng Xiaoping Theory and the Party's basic line as the guidelines, and implementing the spirit of the 15th CPC National Congress and the fourth plenary session of the 15th CPC Central Committee, trade unions across the country should arouse factory workers to contribute more to achieving the goal of the government's three-year State enterprise reform program, according to Wei, who is member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and member of the CPC Central Committee Secretariat. Meanwhile, trade union organizations should help further improve democratic supervision in enterprises, Wei said, and all State-owned enterprises should have representatives of employees join the board of directors and the board of supervisors to maintain and improve the system of the workers' representative conference and further effect democratic enterprise management system.

At present, Wei noted, as there are the occurrence of quite a number of cases concerning infringement into workers and staff members' rights and interests because of the existence of bureaucracy and corruption among enterprise leaders, so it is an arduous job for trade unions to protect the rights and interests of their workers.

In another development, Wei also called on those members of the CPPCC National Committee, who are representing returned overseas Chinese to attend the ongoing 3rd session of the Ninth CPPCC National Committee.
