Talking With Birds, a Real Pleasure in Hangzhou

"Listening to Orioles Singing Amid Willows", known in Chinese as "Liu Lang Wen Ying" is one of the ten scenic attractions of the West Lake.

Today, when walking along the scenic spot in the spring of China's Dragon year, people can not only hear the joyful singing of the orioles, but also find more than ten thousand birds of over 60 species there. They include red-billed leiothrixes, thrushes, larks, mynas, peacocks, parrots, mandarin ducks, swans chatting freely with the passers-by, adding a lot of mirth and vigorous atmosphere to the environment and spring time in Hangzhou.

"Hangzhou Birds Sanctuary" is located in the Park of Liu Lang Wen Ying. Covering an area of one hectare the "birdcage" is made of polyethylene threads and plastic-coated wires. It has a height of 38 meter, almost as high as a 10-storey building. The visitors can get into the cage and enjoy chatting and playing with the birds. In front of the birds performing stage in the garden, visitors vie with one another to see the stunt performance of the clever birds. There are also many areas for sightseeing and enjoyment, including the Swan Lake, the Bird Theater, the Fighting-cock Stage and Parrot Arcade. Hung on the trees is box-nests for birds to nestle in. Streamlet winds along in the garden clustered with flowers and trees, featuring Chinese flowering crabapples, cherry trees, persimmon trees, red berry trees and other trees for birds to find food there.

This newly built sanctuary provides bird-lovers and watchers in Hangzhou and tourists there a base for popularizing scientific knowledge, thus creating an environment for people to understand and get harmonized with the nature.
