Xiaoling Tomb Museum Opened in Nanjing

Xiaoling Tomb Museum, a museum newly established for an ancient emperor's tomb in the Mausoleum Area of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, was opened to public on February 27 in Nanjing. Great number of precious ancient leftovers displayed in the museum attracted a continuous flow of visitors.

Xiaoling Tomb, situated in eastern suburbs of Nanjing, is one of the major historical and cultural sites under the state protection. The existing buildings and carvings on the ground enjoy a high artistic value. There are also a large number of cultural relics kept underground.

In recent years, archaeologists excavated and discovered in the tomb palace the east wing, imperial kitchen, sacred silk burner, slaughter-house, foundation of official and military archways, scarlet bird pond and the tomb cavity of the Eastern Tomb, a huge stone tortoise pedestal and wordless tablet outside the resting place. In addition, large number of blue tiles of the Six Dynasties, eave tiles of Tang and Song Dynasties, color glazed ceramics of the Ming Dynasty, specimens of celadon, ancient coins, and inscribed bricks. All these leftovers from ancient times provide visitors with a profound insight about the changes, rules and regulations, layout of buildings and techniques, and artistic styles of the Xiaoling Tomb of the Ming Dynasty.

The Xiaoling Tomb Museum consists of outdoor exhibition and indoor display. The open-air exhibits are mainly kept in the area of Xiaoling Tomb and the resting-place of the Eastern Tomb, while indoor relics are displayed in the Whiffs of Fragrance Pavilion, known in Chinese as "An Xiang Ge" by the side of the Plum Blossom Hill. Visitors here will come to know the entire process of the tomb construction for the Ming emperor and appreciate the huge scale and great magnificence of the royal tomb buildings.
