New Energy Strategy Mapped in China

China will launch a series of giant power construction projects during the 21st century for increased energy supply centering on developing electricity generation, nuclear power production and use of new renewable energy resources, according to China Energy Research Society.

Meanwhile, intensive efforts will be made by China to speed up its construction of gradient hydropower networks in river valleys and thermal power stations at the head of coal mines. In the petroleum sector, it will prioritize development and increased production of oil and natural gas in the western part of China and its offshore areas.

The new strategy has made it clear that Shanxi, Shaanxi, Heilongjiang and Guizhou provinces and western Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region will be built into major coal producers of China. Daqing and Shengli oilfields along with others in western China will be run as chief producers to help China with its oil supply. New hydropower bases will be also built along the upper reaches of the Yellow River and the upper, middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze.

Special emphasis has been laid by the strategy on developing nuclear energy in China. With a total capacity of 20 million kilowatts set by 2010 and 40 million kilowatts by 2020, China's nuclear power supply will show a growth to 5 percent from present 1 percent of the country's electricity supply.
