Protect Old City Culture of Beijing

Experts through on-the-spot survey and study suggested that Beijing should strengthen the protection of its culture in the old city area. There are 25 cultural streets in the old city of Beijing, which are listed as places for protection, and a place known as Shichahai in Chinese, is one of the largest among them.

Shichahai is a natural park with unmatchable scenic beauties. It is a very important tourist site in Beijing attracting many foreign visitors. Experts suggested that Beijing should pay more attention to putting its environment in good order, keeping its water clean and grass green. Work must be done to harmonize the relations of those cultural units round the lake. The areas with clusters of houses for local inhabitants may be built into dwelling museums in quadrangle styles and appearance of buildings as to do harm to the environment as a whole must be strictly controlled.

Another place is Xianyukou, in which one sees rich connotation of traditional business culture and folklore, which differs greatly with the royal and noble family culture in Beijing. Experts suggested the difference between these two kinds of culture should be further widened. To convert this street into a folklore street, the funds can be raised in diversified ways with the government taking the lead, namely from the easier to the difficult to realize a snowball development.
