China to Cut Grain, Cotton Production Areas

China will adjust its grain production to local conditions. While the country's total grain growing area will still reach 110 million hectares this year, the area reserved for grain production with the more developed areas will shrink, to make room for cash crops and export-oriented farm produce.

The State Development Planning Commission says China's crop-growing mix will highlight regional disparities to ensure a stable supply of major farm produce.

China now, after consecutive years of good harvests, faces the challenge of market expansion and product quality improvement.

Meanwhile, the country's cotton planting area will also be capped.
