Taiwan Scholars Back "One China" Principle

Several scholars in Taiwan Province lately talked about the One China Policy and Taiwan Problem white paper issued. They claimed that the significance of the white paper lies in China's firm stand to oppose Taiwan's independence and China's determination to accelerate the cause of reunification of motherland.

An article entitled "White Paper Aims for Opposing Taiwan Independence and Accelerating Reunification" published in "China Daily News" on February 24, authored by Taiwan Tamkang University Professor Pan Xitang, says that the white paper elaborates systematically on "One China" policy and clarifies China's firm stand on across-strait relations in a way of governmental proclamation for the first time ever. The core of the white paper is China's stand against Taiwan independence and the "One China" principle that has been stressed repeatedly as the basis and prerequisite for peaceful reunification and developing cross-Straits contacts or holding talks between the two sides.

According to Yang Kaihuang, professor of Taiwan Soochow University, the white paper has transferred to the international community its important message that there will no peaceful reunification without "One China" principle and the pressures the mainland encountered to solve the Taiwan problem.

Taiwan Political Science University Professor Zhao Chunshan said the Taiwan authority should not discard the "One China" principle as the basis and prerequisite for peaceful reunification across the Taiwan Straits stressed in the white paper. Without a stable and peaceful cross-strait relations, all reforms in Taiwan Province can by no means make successes, he added.
