China to Tighten Security on Artifacts Going Overseas

China's State heritage authorities announced Thursday that they will publicize a list of artifacts prohibited from leaving the country.

The State Cultural Heritage Administration (SCHA) plans to standardize overseas exhibitions and issue regulations concerning overseas donations to protect artifacts in China, said SCHA chief Zhang Wenbin at an ongoing national work conference.

Precious artifacts will not be allowed to leave the country without permits from the government. A guideline for packing relics is also underway, Zhang said.

China is considering to change existing regulations concerning the export of cultural artifacts and imposing tariffs on legitimate exports.

SCHA officials said that China will severely crack down on the smuggling of artifacts. According to customs sources, 627 smuggled artifacts were confiscated nationwide last year.
