China Launches New Higher Learning Reform Project

China's Ministry of Education launched a new higher education reform project aimed at improving the quality of education and deepening education reform. An official with the education ministry said the new reform project will attempt to create a series of courses, textbooks and software to meet the demands of this modern world, establish several education demonstration bases across the country, and train a group of able teachers.

Based on the achievements of previous education reform, the project will establish in about five years a teaching system that encourages the spirit of innovation among college students, he noted.

Sources with the education ministry said the new reform will comprehensively alter China's higher education training, courses of study, and teaching methods. Over 6.2 million college students in China will benefit from the new project.

The Ministry of Education will secure funds from World Bank loans or other sources to support the implementation of programs linked to the reform project, the sources said.
