China's Nuclear Power Stations Keep Safe Record

News from the first meeting of the 3rd National Nuclear Accident Emergency Coordinating Committee say that nuclear power stations have all been kept in safe operation over the years in China.

Nuclear power is a type of safe clean energy promising wide vistas for development. The Chinese government has made its policy to develop nuclear power production for acquiring a proper amount of energy in nuclear power supply. In 1991, Qinshan Nuclear Power Station was put into operation thereby ending the history of China with no nuclear power production. Dayawan Nuclear Power Plant by using French technology for its power generating sets No. 1 and No. 2 was put into commercial production in 1994. With these there are also four others (8 power generating units), including the second- and third-phase construction projects of Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant, Lingao Nuclear Power Plant of Guandong, Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant of Jiangsu, under construction. The installed capacity of nuclear power will reach 85 million kw, taking around 3% of China's electricity production. China will build a batch of nuclear power sets during its 10th Five-year Plan 2000-2005.

A State Nuclear Accident Emergency Committee was first established under the State Council in March 1991. It was renamed as National Nuclear Accident Emergency Coordinating Committee. Recently, with some readjustment made to include 16 government and military departments under the State Council, the Committee has with its daily routine work been put under the charge of the National Defense Science, Technology and Industry Commission Office.
