Latest statistics from China National Environmental Monitoring Center show that among the 47 key cities of environmental protection, Beihai city in Guangxi Province has the lowest comprehensive air pollution index. Beihai is one of the 14 coastal cities in the first group opening to the outside world. Since the reform and opening policy was launched in China, Beihai has persisted in ensuring the sustained and coordinated development of its economy with environmental protection. Since 1997, in particular, the city has taken a firm grip of the work of pollution treatment. For this, it has successively invested 53.602 million yuan in the endeavor to treat 172 pollution projects, including the treatment of waste gas. At present, 137 projects have met the standard for the discharge of pollutants, fulfilling 79.65 percent of the discharging tasks and the progress of the work of meeting standard has reached an 88.37 percent rate, thus effectively controlling and eliminating the sources of the city's air pollution. |
