Macao Newspaper Comments on White Paper About Taiwan

Commenting on the White Paper about the Taiwan issue released Monday by the Chinese government, the Macao Daily News said Tuesday that the one-China principle has no room for compromise.

The white paper acts as a strong warning and counterattack to the separatist forces in Taiwan represented by Lee Teng-hui, and a reminder of the mainland's policy after the upcoming election in Taiwan, the newspaper said in a commentary.

"It indicates that there is no room for compromise in terms of the one-China principle, and that whether the cross-Straits relations can step out of the current low ebb depends on whether the Taiwan authorities will come back to the one-China position," the commentary said.

The candidates for the "presidency" in Taiwan have been talking about the cross-Straits relations in their campaign speeches, and most of their remarks show separatist tendencies.

"(The remarks) can only worsen the cross-Straits relations and can be of no help to find a way out for the political dilemma in Taiwan," the Macao newspaper said.

With regard to the international background, the one-China principle can be taken as a dividing line to differentiate the stances of various countries in face of the cross-Straits issue, the paper said.

The commentary also noted that the Chinese government has never ruled out the use of force to resolve the Taiwan issue, and the white paper makes clearer statement about the conditions of resorting to force.

"The Taiwan authorities and the international community should pay enough attention to the statement and should not underestimate it," the newspaper said.
