Thursday, February 24, 2000, updated at 16:58(GMT+8) Sports Chinese Enter into QuartersTitle favorite China secured a berth in the quarter finals of the women's World Team Table Tennis Championship in Kuala Lumpur Tuesday after beating eighth-seeded Sweden 3-0. Going for their fourth consecutive title, the Chinese women overwhelmed the opponents without losing a single set in all three games. Wang Nan, Zhang Yining, and Li Ju lifted China atop the preliminary league Group A with five straight victories. DPR Korea was defeated by seventh-seeded Romania 3-2 in a series of hard-fought matches as the latter led Group B unbeaten. The DPR Korean team need to defeat the leaders from the lower-ranked groups to make the quarter-finals. Third-seeded Germany edged past Japan 3-2 to snatch the third spot in the final eight. In Tuesday men's preliminary rounds, China remained undefeated in Group A by blanking Austria 3-0. Belgium beat Yugoslavia 3-0 while Spain topped Canada 3-1. Sweden's top players, two-time champion Jan-Ove Walder and Jorgen Persson, lost their first games against the Netherlands but pulled back to win 3-2.
