Seismic Devices Donated to Taiwan

China's Earthquake Research Exchange Center Sunday donated a set of seismic devices to Taiwan. The devices, expected to be used for analytical purposes, were transferred to representatives from Taiwan in Beijing.

The donation was just one of several exchanges related to seismological technology that have taken place since Taiwan's catastrophic tremor last year.

Chen Zhangli, director of the center and chief of the China Seismology Bureau, said the donated items were some of the mainland's most modern and advanced seismic data collectors.

The digital devices, which have been widely used in the mainland's seismic monitoring work, can be used with either fixed or mobile seismic stations to record seismic wave data ranging from several thousandths of a hertz to more than 50 hertz.

Chen expressed a hope that the seismic devices will be put to quick use.

Enhancing the scope of seismological research exchanges between both sides of the Taiwan Straits will be very helpful for the mainland and Taiwan in earthquake crises prevention and relief, Chen said.

Taiwan's representatives expressed their appreciation for the devices and exchanges at the ceremony.

Scientific exchanges across the Taiwan Straits have increased in recent years.

Last August, just one month before the strong earthquake rocked Taiwan, the third seminar on seismology between both sides of the Straits was held in the city of Xi'an, Northwest China's Shaanxi Province.

Three months later, Taiwan sent a group to the mainland to study earthquake relief and reconstruction.
