Thursday, February 24, 2000, updated at 16:58(GMT+8) Sci-Tech Government to Ban Trade in Foreign Encryption SoftwareIn regard to recent incidents of hacker attacks on Internet sites, which have aroused the great concern of the Chinese government, the related departments are taking active measures to tighten security on website. It is reported that hacker attacks have happened time and again in China in recent years, and related departments have also cracked nearly 100 cases of hacker attacks each year. The means of hacker attacks have even outnumbered the types of computer viruses, and there are a dozen kinds of hacker ways which can be planted into computer program. To prevent hacker damage, the departments concerned have adopted effective legislative and technological measures to safeguard security on website. The Provision on the Management of Internet Secret of the Computer Information System that went into effect on January 1 this year clearly requires: All computer information systems concerning state secrets must not be connected directly or indirectly with Internet or any other public information network and must be separated physically; all information concerning the State secrets are banned to be stored, processed and transmitted through the computer information system connected with Internet; no individual and work unit are allowed to publish, discuss and spread any state secret information on electronic announcement system, meeting room and news webs. In addition, relevant Chinese departments have stipulated that to protect State interests and economic safety, Chinese companies are forbidden to purchase foreign designed encryption software products and no organizations and individuals are permitted to sell foreign commercial encryption products.
