Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji meets with Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Mike Moore, who arrived in Beijing Thursday for a three-day visit to China. Moore told Zhu during a brief meeting that he and his colleagues in Geneva are "dedicated and committed" to helping China become a WTO member as sooner as possible. Moore stressed that China's entry into the WTO will be a historical event and that the day China becomes a fully-fledged WTO member will be a great day for China and the world. The WTO can only be called a true world trade organization onlywhen China joins in, he said. Mike Moore promised that he will assist China in becoming a WTO member at the earliest date possible. Zhu thanked Moore for his active support for China's entry into the WTO. Zhu said that the WTO is incomplete without China's membership. China has conducted numerous negotiations with many other WTO members over the past months following the "win-win" WTO negotiations between China and the United States last year. China has begun negotiations with a small number of remaining WTO members including the European Union. "China will hold another round of WTO talks with the EU soon," Zhu said. "We hope that the two sides can reach understanding during the talks." On Monday, Moore said in Singapore that it will be a splendid day when China comes into WTO and "it will be good for the world, for China, for all WTO members to have China in." He also said he expects China to become a full fledged WTO member this year |
