China is opposed to setting up a tribunal or an investigative committee on East Timor's human rights record, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao said in Beijing on February 1.

He told the regular press conference that China's stance on such matters "are known by all" and "remained unchanged."

He said that China and the majority of countries in the Asia-Pacific region are not in favor of the establishment of such a tribunal or committee on the East Timor issue.

He indicated that China is aware that the Indonesian government has already set up a committee to look into the human rights record in East Timor, adding that investigations are "already underway."
